Viking Longship
The Vikings’ homeland was forested and mountainous, which meant it was easier to travel over water than land. They became expert boatbuilders who designed the most advanced and successful vessel of their era – the longship. There was nothing more terrifying than seeing one of these boats slice towards you through the waves, oars dipping, blood-red sail fat with wind, and carrying a crew of axe-wielding warriors.

Ambulance
These days, most people are lucky enough to know that if they are badly injured or become seriously unwell, a fully equipped ambulance driven by paramedics is only a phone call away. The internal combustion engine made vehicles like this possible, but it was many decades before ambulances became the life-saving mobile hospitals that we see today. One of the first ambulances ever built was the Ford M1917, which was used during the First World War.

Solar-Powered Airplane
Seen from a distance the Solar Impulse 2 might look a bit old-fashioned: its wings are incredibly long and fixed to the top of the fuselage, it has four propellers, and it travels slowly. Yet this remarkable vehicle is actually very modern and uses cutting-edge technology for a very specific task: to spread a message to everyone in the world – including you.

Snow Mobile
In the 1950s, a Canadian inventor called Joseph-Armand Bombardier declared that one day he would: “invent a little machine that will float on snow.” His dream was to create a vehicle that could travel quickly and safely over ice and snow without the need for a trained dog team. After many years of experimentation, he succeeded in designing the snowmobile – a light machine propelled by a single caterpillar track and steered with a pair of skis.
