In the last 19 years, I have had the pleasure of helping over 18,000 students become more skilled readers—achieve more speed, focus, and comprehension in their reading material. I have helped people from all walks of life—budding readers of seven and nine, university students, busy and ambitious blue-collar and white-collar workers, high-paying executives, actors, musicians, and senior citizens. My youngest student at the age of 7 and the oldest was 94 years old.
One thing I noticed about all of them is the simple fact that holds true for everyone. Reading is a skill, and like any skill, it can be mastered if you put your mind to it and exercise and train your skills. No matter what age, social group, and income—everyone who wants to achieve better reading skills—can do it.
You can, of course, get better at anything by just going out there and doing more of it—reading more books, running more runs, swimming more, playing more guitar, and so on. In the same way, all the greats have their coaches, teachers, and mentors on their way to greatness.
