Discover the best factory and aftermarket parts combinations for your Chevy small-block engine using this well-researched data that will save you time and energy.
In this revised edition of Chevrolet Small-Block Parts Interchange Manual, Chevrolet expert and author Ed Staffel delivers detailed interchange information on cranks, rods, pistons, cylinder heads, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, ignitions, carburetors, and more. Casting and serial number identification guides are included to help you through the myriad of available parts in salvage yards, at swap meets, and on the internet.
Learn what parts can be combined to create various displacements, which parts match well with others, where factory parts are best, and where the aftermarket offers a better alternative. Solid information on performance modifications is included where applicable.
The first and second generations of small-block Chevy engines have been around for more than 60 years, and a byproduct of the design’s extremely long production run is the confusing array of configurations that this engine family has seen. Staffel delivers this revised edition on everything you need to know about parts interchangeability for the small-block Chevy. Build your Chevy on a budget today!
Whether you’re building a Chevy small-block salvage-yard stroker engine, looking to make a numbers-matching engine, saving money on repurposing factory parts, or simply looking to see which parts work together, this book is a must-have addition to your library.

Blocks
Some blocks will show a number such as “010” on the rear of the block or on the front under the timing cover. This means that 1-percent additional nickel was used in the casting process. Sometimes only a single “020” is found, meaning that 2-percent additional nickel was used.
Rotating Assemblies
A 400 rod is on the left with a 350 on the right. Both rods share a 2.10-inch medium-rod journal size, though the 400 rod has a shorter 5.565-inch center-to-center length. A standard 350 rod is 5.7 inches.
Oiling Systems
The oil pump driveshaft is connected to the oil pump with a small plastic connector. In high-performance applications, it is recommended to go with a more robust shaft with a steel coupler. Also, note that the center section of the heavy-duty version (on the bottom) for the 400-ci small-block is necked down in the center portion to clear the wider main caps found on the 400.
Cylinder Heads
The double hump or camel hump casting symbol on the end of this head indicates a performance cast-iron head used in the 1960s. Pre-1969 heads do not have accessory mounting holes. When there are no mounting holes, you need to use a short water pump with the factory brackets.
Valvetrain
In many higher-RPM applications, it is good to run a pushrod guideplate. Chevrolet used these with standard rocker arms and screw-in rocker studs on production cast-iron and Bowtie 23-degree cast-iron heads. Corvette aluminum heads, Bowtie aluminum heads, and heads using self-aligning rail type rocker arms use different guideplates.
Induction
The intake casting number and casting date are found at the rear section of Chevrolet intakes. This example “C 20 8” means it was cast in the third month, March, on the 20th day in 1968.
